Interpreter service

Icelandic Health Insurance pays for the interpretation services for health insured persons.

The interpretation service is intended for a person who needs assistance in understanding information about his health and the medical care he is given.

A healthcare professionals assesses the necessity for interpreting services if a person does not speak Icelandic or uses sign language.

A healthcare professional should organize the use of interpreting services in the most cost-effective manner.

The interpreting service can be performed through telephones, telecommunications equipment or on-site.

Interpreting services should not cause the person an inconvenience and shall be ordered in advance if the person does not understand Icelandic or uses sign language.

Interpretation for deaf and hearing impaired persons is provided by the Communication center of deaf andhearing impaired.
