Moving to Iceland

Citizens from another EEA country

Icelandic Health Insurance is residency based and it is therefore important to register legal residence in Iceland as soon as possible. It is not enough to have temporary ID number (kennitala) to get health insurance, see more information here.

After your legal residence has been registered in Iceland you must fill out an application and send it to international@sjukra.is or by post to Icelandic Health Insurance, Vínlandsleið 16, 113 Reykjavík.

When an application has been submitted we send your former country of insurance a request for E-104/S-041 document to confirm your insurance period before moving to Iceland. If you can obtain the E-104 document yourself, please send it with your application, it speeds up the process. If you were not insured in the social insurance system in your former country you will have to wait 6 months after your legal residence was registered in Iceland to become health insured.

If you are moving from Greenland or the Faroe Islands please ask your former country for confirmation of residency and send it with the application.

If you do not apply for health insurance you will automatically become health insured 6 months after you registered your legal residence in Iceland.

If you are moving to Iceland for work you can see more information here.

Citizens from a country outside of the EEA

If you are a citizen from a country outside of EEA, Switzerland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands you must apply for residence permit from the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration

Everyone who has been legally resident in Iceland for six months automatically becomes a member of the Icelandic social insurance system, regardless of nationality.

It is advised to buy private insurance during the time you are waiting to become health insured in the social insurance system.

If you are moving from another Nordic country you have the right to apply for health insurance according to the Nordic convention on social security.
