Reimbursement of medical cost abroad

A person who has paid for health care abroad can seek reimbursement to International Health Insurance (IHI). If the European Health Insurance Card was considered then the rest of the bill is the patience fee and is not reimbursable.

To apply for reimbursement an application needs to be filled out along with the original bill and receipt of payment. IHI has the right to ask the person to hand in translated documents, if they are not in English, at the expense of the person.

Medical treatment within the EEA

If a person has paid for health care within the EEA and the EHIC was not submitted to the health care provider the person can seek reimbursement from IHI. The amount of the reimbursement is according to the rules in the country of provided medical care. After an application has been submitted IHI requests information about reimbursement rates in that country. A person can also be reimbursed in accordance to Icelandic rules if the person requests it.

Medical treatment outside of the EEA

If a person has paid for necessary medical cost outside of the EEA the person can seek reimbursement from IHI. There are certain conditions for the reimbursement.

The amount of the reimbursement is according to Icelandic rules plus a presentence of excess cost.

Further information about reimbursement of medical cost abroad can be had from the International department of IHI, international@sjukra.is
